Have a clear purpose

Think about what you want to achieve. Look at the guest list and identify who you would like to meet.

When you shake hands, your right hand side will naturally move towards them.

Don’t assume everybody will know who you are

You may be a prolific networker but always introduce yourself and your business clearly.

Have some questions up your sleeve

Once you’ve introduced yourself to somebody, keep the conversation going by asking meaningful questions which will help you get to know your new connection. Here are some good questions – it’s not an interview so we recommend choosing 2 or 3 that you would feel comfortable asking:

What inspired you to get into your field?

This question allows the person to share their passion and journey, leading to a deeper conversation.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

This helps you understand their motivations and what drives them in their career.

What’s the biggest challenge you’re currently facing?

By discussing challenges, you can offer help or insights, which can build a strong connection.

How did you get started in your career?

This question often brings out interesting stories and experiences that can provide valuable lessons.

What trends are you seeing in your industry?

It shows your interest in their field and can lead to a discussion about industry insights.

What’s your favourite part of attending events like this?

This can lead to a more relaxed conversation and help find common ground.

What projects are you currently working on?

This question shows interest in their current work and opens up opportunities for collaboration or advice.

What do you think the future holds for your industry?

This forward-looking question can lead to a thought-provoking discussion and insights into their vision.

Are there any professional groups or associations you recommend joining?

This can provide you with valuable networking resources and show that you’re proactive in growing your network.

Can you recommend any books, podcasts, or resources that have helped you in your career?

This can lead to the exchange of valuable resources and demonstrate your commitment to personal and professional growth.
